Cyberlink Publishes 3D Video White Paper

Today Cyberlink published a white paper entitled “Principles of 3D Video and Blu-ray 3D”. It answers many questions that consumers might have about 3D, from “How does it work?” to “When and how should I upgrade my PC or Home Theater System?”. It’s free, and available for download from Cyberlink right here. I highly suggest giving the 35 page paper a read if you are interested in 3D as it has a ton of useful information.

“Autostereoscopic displays are capable of displaying a 3D image without the use of 3D glasses. These displays use lenses that are designed to insure that each eye sees the video signal meant for that eye. There are several manufacturers working to produce and market autostereoscopic displays. While autostereoscopic displays promise 3D video without the need for glasses, consumers should consider both the 2D and 3D video quality, compared with other display solutions before selecting a display.”

The First 3D Mobile - The Samsung W960

The first 3D mobile has been leaked on the internet and will be produced by Samsung.

The Samsung W960 will, according to Mobile-Review, have a 3.2 inch AMOLED 3D touch-screen. However, unlike the common group of 3D TVs you won’t need to wear glasses and you can turn the 3D on or off with a button on the phone.

We can’t really see the benefit of 3D on your mobile unless your going to play back multi-media content but perhaps we’re wrong.

Other features of the Samsung W960 include a 3.2 mega-pixel camera, microSD support, Bluetooth 2.1 and a built-in TV receiver.

However, the mobile will only be available in Korea and is thought to be launching in the second quarter of 2010.

The Japanese electronics giant lost 98.9bn yen a year earlier, its first annual loss in 14 years.

The improvement was largely down to heavy cost cutting.

However, the Tokyo-based company is hoping that 3D technology will secure its future.

Despicable Me 3D - Coming Summer 2010

From a handful of 3D films last year to more than one per month in 2010, the huge success of the format is creating blockbusters. Now every movie studio is releasing a 3D feature, from fantasy adventures to horror films, with half of the films animated.

Here is the rundown (with US release dates) – if there are enough 3D theaters:

Legend of the Guardians: the Owls of Ga’Hoole

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I

TRON Legacy

THE STORY

Street dancer Carly (Burley) has to try to lead her crew to the finals of the UK Street Dance championships, but has nowhere to practise. She strikes a deal with ballet schoolmistress Helena (Rampling) – the crew can practise in the Ballet Academy’s studio in return for collaborating with the ballet dancers.

THE VERDICT

StreetDance 3D is great entertainment. A cool, frothy, feel-good Brit flick, it works really well in 3D, bringing exhilarating street dance scenes to life which are guaranteed to leave audiences with smiles on their faces.

Fans of Britain’s Got Talent will love the toe-tappingly terrific performances by the like of Flawless and Diversity, while young George Sampson, who won the show in 2008, also has a key role in the film… and pretty impressive he is too.

Make no mistakes though, StreetDance 3D is not pretending to be anything other than a fresh and breezy dance film that is non-aggressive and uplifting. There are no big dramas or social issues tackled here – it is simply a film out to entertain. And entertain it does. No dance film cliché is left untapped here, and fans of other street dance movies such as Step Up, How She Move and Make It Happen will be familiar with what ensues.

A friendly and talented bunch of street dancers, led by Carly (Nichola Burley, from TV series Drop Dead Gorgeous), struggle to find a spot to practise their moves. But a chance encounter with ballet teacher Helena (Charlotte Rampling, still so cool and sexy) offers an option – but the deal comes at a price.

The street dancers have to help give Helena’s ballet dancers a taste of street dance’s energy and passion. Naturally we get the expected clash of cultures, but before you know it there’s grudging respect between the two.

The film was shot in 3D (it wasn’t added later as with Clash of the Titans) and it really enhances the set-piece dance routines. Plus the film makes great use of its London locations, with a dance routine around the South Bank arts center especially cool.

And while the plot might well be rather on the obvious side, it does draw you in with its good intentions and sweet nature.

42" Samsung OLED TV by 2011?

It’s approaching mid 2010 and you know what’s missing. Jetpacks. Jetpacks and those 30-inch and larger OLED TVs we were promised. Hell, the largest OLED TV available for retail currently is only 15-inches… if you can bothfind and afford it. Now OLEDNet claims that Samsung Mobile Display — you know, the cellphone AMOLED guys — is purchasing equipment in preparation for bringing its 5.5 generation facility on-line in the first half of 2011. That should give Samsung the ability make 42-inch AMOLED TVs on a trial basis by the end of the twenty-eleven. But with relatively cheap LCDs steadily closing the gap on OLEDs size, contrast, and power savings advantages, well, we’ll believe it when we see the first big screen OLED TVs in our living rooms. And with 3D LCDs (and plasmas) all the rage amongst distracted and financially-vested television manufacturers, we don’t see that happening anytime soon.
